White Sands National Park 2024 Trip

White Sands National Park 2024

I mentioned on the wrap up from our trip in July that we might do another trip later in the summer. Well we are definitely doing that. We're leaving shortly for White Sands National Park located near Alamogordo, New Mexico. I keep saying that it is the newest National Park but apparently that's not true. While White Sands was designated a National Park in 2019, New River Gorge in West Virginia was designated a National Park in 2020. As of this time there are 63 official National Parks. Last I checked we had visited 42 of them - White Sands should make it 43.

One of the things we would like to spend more time doing is hiking. We plan to get to the park in the late afternoon and scope it out - visitor center, hiking trails, etc. Then we will come back the next day to explore the area and try some hiking trails in the park. Before the conversion of the motorcycle to a trike, we normally wore heavy boots and clothes that were just not compatible with hiking. We no longer need heavy boots and have a little more room for more appropriate hiking clothes. With that in mind, we also plan to go from White Sands to Bryce Canyon and then Zion. We have been to both of those parks numerous times but never did any real hiking. I'm definitely looking forward to hiking in the hoodoos. We are tentatively planning on the Queens Garden & Navajo Combination hike.

Since we were just on the road less than two moths ago, there's not too much new this trip. We did finally replace our leather jackets with Textile Motorcycle Jackets. These are water resistant, breathable jackets that we are looking forward to trying out. Linda's jacket needed a new zipper and mine was just worn out.

I think I also solved the logger problem that we dealt with on the last two trips. Although I thought the problem was the connection on the main board, it appears to be a faulty cable. I found that wiggling the cable caused the logger to shutdown. I replaced the cable end and even made a couple of spare cables. That being said, I will still use the GPS Logger app on my phone since my phone is running anyway to play music.

It's been rainy and cold today but it looks like the weather should be fine when we take off - let's hope.
