Voyageurs 2025 Day01
We arrived safely in Bozeman around 5:00 PM Mountain time so, even with
the time change, we made pretty good time. The traffic was surprisingly
light for a major Interstate; however road construction in Idaho was
everywhere. We were constantly changing speeds and traveling in single
lanes because of the construction. It's a good thing the traffic was so
light.
Montana
had some construction but not nearly as much - it was just pretty
boring and monotonous. We got a couple of drops of rain that came out
of nowhere but not enough to get any more than our face shields wet.
Another
day another problem to solve. Linda took a picture of Lake Coeur
d'Alene and in the software I use to create the web pages and the maps
I entered the name with the apostrophe thinking it would not be
accepted by windows as a valid name. Windows is normally not happy with
punctuation in file names but it seemed to be accepted. The software
creates thumbnails so that, when you click on a marker on the map, the
thumbnail pops up and, when you click on the thumbnail the full picture
displays. It all works pretty seamlessly normally. However the
Javascript in the web page software doesn't seem to like the
apostrophe. When you click on the marker you get a blank thumbnail but
fortunately, when you click on the blank thumbnail, the actual photo
does display. I haven't figured this out yet but I'll work on it
as time allows. I can always edit the name but I have to edit it in
several places and that seems like cheating.
Another thing I
noticed is that the picture options list is sorted alphabetically not
in the order they exist on the map. I never noticed this before and
will definitely have to look into it. A lot of this happened when
Google Maps switched their API from V2 to V3 a number of years ago.
They gave a lot of notice but, when they finally abandoned V2, I had to
go in and make major modification to all of my maps and learn a lot of
Javscript in the process.
We couldn't find a restaurant
nearby that was close enough to walk to safely. There is a lot of
construction and a lot of the sidewalks were closed. Fortunately
there was a Walmart Super Center right behind the hotel and they had a
whole grab and go section with sandwiches, lots of salads, and other
food and drinks - so we ate ala Walmart tonight.
This hotel
has a pool and hot tub but it's on the second floor instead of the
ground floor, which is definitely different. We spent a few minute in
the hot tub but it was way too hot - we could have cooked dinner in it.
Our current plan is to head to Glendive, MT tomorrow and then Mandan on Friday. We are currently planning on doing the Enchanted Highway on that leg of the trip. We had never heard of it before but Jason suggested it, although I don't think he has ever ridden it.
