Web Statistics

I didn't look at the web statistics since I didn't share the links with anyone and didn't even complete all of the pages until after we returned home. These pages are really for our own good anyway so I'm not that concerned with  how many people view or follow our pages anyway.

Final Thoughts and Future Plans

We got off to kind of a slow start documenting this trip due to several technical glitches I had not anticipated. The first problem was that we were bit by the GPS Week Number Rollover bug (WNRO). You can read more details here but basically on April 6, 2019 the GPS date rolled over to 1999. Our GPS logger that logs our position every 10 seconds includes the time, date, position, etc. So all of the date were way off (almost 20 years). The problem with all this is that the program we use to generate the Google maps is RoboGeo. RoboGeo uses the time and date in the log file to match with the EXIF data for the pictures we take. So RoboGeo can't match up the pictures with the routes. The fix was to do a global search and replace on the log file each evening to replace the incorrect date with the correct date. Then pictures and routes matched up. Although I was not able to do it on the road, when we got home I updated the firmware in the GPS and the spare units with the latest firmware which includes the fix for the rollover bug - but that's another story.

The next problem had to do with uploading to our web site. Out host provider was Host Excellence but they got sold to Site 5 a while back. That meant all of our settings had to change. I made the appropriate changes to our home machines but never thought about the laptop we take on our trips. When I tried to upload to our site with FileZilla the upload kept failing. In order to get all of the settings I had to VNC into one of our home computers to get that data. Once I set all of the routing and passwords I was ready to go.

Overall it was an excellent trip. We saw everything we wanted to and then some. The weather was almost perfect, we only had about 1-1/2 hours of rain one day and it was even a really hard rain - couldn't ask for any better. It was even clear going over Beartooth Pass which we had never experienced before. The first time we went over the pass several years ago it was actually sleeting at the top. I would say the only disappointment was that a lot of Mt. Rushmore was closed for upgrades. You could of course see the monument itself but the museum and video theater were both closed for the season. We did get to ride through part of Theodore Roosevelt Park which was a first but we couldn't do the loop because part of the road was washed out and was not being repaired.

As usual the motorcycle was great. We had a couple of minor peripheral issues mainly with the XM Radio. The radio attached with Velcro and the Velcro is apparently beginning to wear out so the radio kept slipping - a rubber band fixed that. The other issue was with the audio output from the radio. We normally use a built in FM transmitter so we don't have to use the audio out. Unfortunately there are times when the FM frequency the radio uses is also being used locally. When that happens we have to plug in the audio output cable. There appears to be a loose connection in the radio because one channel kept cutting out. I will have to look into that.

Linda claims that the reason the motorcycle always works so well is because we buy road assistance insurance. We do this every couple of years and it only costs $70. for two years. If that's all it takes to not have any problems on the road, I'm okay with that.

No real thoughts about next years trip but we have lots of time to think about that.
